About the Tongariro Crossing:
Known for its sheer beauty, its steaming vents, ancient lava flows and vibrant crater lakes, the Tongariro Crossing needs to be experienced by everyone wanting to see New Zealand's natural beauty. With stunning views at every point of the journey as well as the magnificent highest point of the track at 1886m, you will trek from the Mangatepopo Valley to the saddle between Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe, through South Crater and Red Crater before descending to the Emerald Lakes (Ngarotopounamu). This will finish down the northern slope of Tongariro past Ketetahi Shelter. This trek is challenging and a good level of fitness is required.
