About the Self-Guided Walking Tour - Seven-Nights/ Eight-days:
The tiny country of Slovenia is a special gem. Unspoiled, hospitable, traditional and sophisticated, even repeat visitors find themselves stopping and staring at the sheer beauty of this land. Snow-capped peaks, turquoise-green rivers, picture book villages and wonderfully preserved architecture and historical monuments; as if that's not enough, Slovenia has a wine culture that boasts the oldest producing vine in the world and cooking that takes something from each of its neighbours - Italy, Austria, Hungary and the Balkans. The Julian Alps are the base for this wonderful walk in the northwest of Slovenia. The starting point of the walk, Podkoren (Kranjska Gora), is about 5 minutes drive from the Italian and Austrian border.
GRADE: This is a collection of mainly easy valley and forest-covered hillside walks. Although in an alpine area, no climbing experience or equipment is necessary. The route passes through the most well-known Slovene alpine towns and villages; more than half of the walks are done within the central area of Slovenia’s only national park.
Day 1: Kranjska Gora
(90 km NW of Ljubljana) The famous ski resort of Kranjska Gora is the starting Point for this tour. This popular ski resort is most famous for hosting the annual World Cup Slalom every January. You will spend your first night here in the shadows of the mighty western Julian Alps.
Day 2: Kranjska Gora – Jasna Valley – Kranjska Gora
Your first walk follows a trail to the end of Jasna Valley emerging at the other end into the glorious mountain arena of the Prisank and Razor Mountains. A typical hikers lunch can be taken in Krnica hut. On your return walk to Kranjska Gora, you can visit the ‘Russian Chapel,’ a touching monument dedicated to Russian POW who died during WW1 while building the military road over Vršič Pass. Alpine Walking: 18 km circle alpine walk. Ascent 500m
Day 3: Podkoren – Three countries Point – Podkoren
A 10-minute transfer by a car today will take you to your start point. The walk takes you to the summit of Mr Peč (1580m), the triple border point where Slovenia, Italy and Austria meet. At the top you can soak up the dramatic views across the Julian and Carrnian Alps with the Hohe Tauern, the highest alpine range in Austria, forming a magnificent and indescribably picturesque backdrop. The trail then descends through the valley to the source of the mighty Sava River, the longest in Slovenia, and back to Kranjska Gora. Walking: 19km circle Forest & Meadow Trail. Ascent 640m
Day 4: Radovna Valley – Vintgar Gorge – Lake Bled
Car transfer to your start point. You will be driven through the Radovna Valley, an untouched wilderness between the Pokljuka and Mežakla plateaus. Start at the stunning 1.6km Vintgar Gorge. Carved 150m deep into the mountains by the Radovna River, the trail leads you along a wooden walkway through the gorge and onwards to the world-famous Bled Lake, via the lovely Katarina Church viewpoint. Your hotel is located on the western side of the town, overlooking the lake. Walking: 11km Valley & Meadow walk, Ascent: 200m
Day 5: Bled – Bohinjska Bela – Lake Bled - Bled
Today take a leisurely stroll into Bled, the famous and lovely town on the shore of an emerald green glacial lake. A medieval castle clings to a rocky cliff standing guard over the town and a picture postcard church sits proudly on an islet in the middle of the lake. A short panoramic walk can be taken to the villages of Kupljenik and Bela. Climb Osojnica hill on the western shore of Lake Bled for the best photos of the lake, castle and Karawanke range. End the day with the local speciality – the cream cake “Kremšnita” – in one of the great little tea shops beside the lake. Walking: 15km circle Hillside & Panoramic Walk, Ascent: 270m
Day 6: Pokljuka – Uskovnica Saddle – Lake Bohinj
Transfer by car up to the Pokljuka Plateau from where you will begin your hike across mountain pastures, past old farmhouses to a viewing point with stunning views over the Bohinj Valley. As you descend you can stop at the little historic village of Studor where you can visit the museum and see how people lived 150 years ago. Your final destination is Lake Bohinj, the jewel in the heart of the Triglav National Park, and the small settlement of Ribčev Laz (Fisherman’s Pass). Walking: 12 km Mountain, Meadows & Tree-lined walk, Ascent 200m
Day 7: Lake Bohinj
Spend the day strolling around this wonderful, tranquil lake, sitting in the shadows of the towering mountains of the Julian Alps. Warm weather permitting, you can swim in its crystal clear water. And be sure to treat yourself to a meal of delicious Bohinj trout. At the western end of the lake follow the short trail up to Savica Waterfall, which feeds the lake. From there catch the cable car up to the 1532-metre high Vogel Mountain for a spectacular view of Mount Triglav, the highest peak of the Julian Alps. Spend your evening in one of the cosy village pubs and try the local homemade honey brandy. Walking: 16 to 23 km Lakeside & Valley walk
